Founder and Director

Jethro has had a broad and varied career. A head prefect at high school, he went on to work in sales and account management roles, while developing a secondary career as an officer in the NZ Army Reserve Force. During this time, Jethro led a team of youth development instructors at the Limited Service Volunteer programme which helped inspire the start-up of Future Leaders. Having seen plenty of hardship while growing up, coupled with poor examples of leadership in the wider community, he aims to be a champion of change.


Co-Founder and Director

Being part of the journey since the beginning, Davina has influenced the way we think about positive mindsets and the power of self-confidence. An expert in her field, Davina is also the Director of Marrzipan Drama, and ensures that Future Leaders maintains its action oriented approach to the work we do.  Davina brings great entrepreneurial insight for our many ideas and oversees the financial sustainability of the business.


Business Support Manager

Erin has been with Future Leaders since 2016.  With an extensive career in office management and administration in both the public and private sectors she brings her super organisational skills to help support our team and ensure excellent service delivery of our programmes and services. Thinking ahead, championing initiative and adapting to the many hats of our organisation are all in a days work for her. She is passionate about her family and art and has a true desire to see a better life for all people.


Programme Coordinator – Waikato

Originally from England, Megan studied Sport and Physical Education at university. She spent 3 years in the Police on the front line then moved to New Zealand for the outdoors lifestyle. Megan has experience teaching sports and PE in schools, tertiary education tutoring as well as designing and implementing community recreation programmes. She loves sport and fitness and has a passion for working with young people, empowering and supporting them to be the best they can be.


Programme Coordinator – Wellington

Amy joined our team in April 2021 whilst finishing her undergraduates degree in education and psychology, Amy joins the team to support our Wellington mentors. Amy has completed a full circle with Future Leaders, starting her journey as a young mentee in 2017. With the support of her mentors she landed her first administration role and has gone from strength to strength since then. Amy takes pride in helping people develop resilience and positive mindset to overcome life challenges. She has a habit of creating safe spaces for conversations around physical and mental health to encourage others to take care of themselves and their loved ones. 

Melissa Bethwaite

Marketing Coordinator

As our Marketing Coordinator Melissa is focused on ensuring more young people can access our programmes by increasing engagement and promoting our employment and youth services.

Melissa is passionate about marketing and has enjoyed working in marketing roles across a number of industries including information technology, accommodation, hospitality, education and events. Outside of work Melissa enjoys gardening, bush walking and spending time with her little people.


Senior Youth Mentor

Originally from Fiji, Jay has been been involved with youth development for over a decade and brings a wealth of experience and a genuine approach to Future Leaders Employment Services. Jay has worked with Future Leaders since 2014 and he cares deeply about the well-being of young people, and aims to help give them the direction and support opportunities they need to succeed. Outside of work Jay has 5 children of his own that keep him very busy.

Manaia Opai

Youth Mentor – Youth FOCUS Programme, Wellington

Manaia has led corporate sales teams in Wellington for 15 years ,with previous roles including Regional Sales Manager with Southern Cross Health Society, Courier Post and the Freightways Group. He has coached and managed junior sports teams in rugby, basketball and touch. Manaia is a firm believer in helping people discover what truly motivates them, supporting their personal development and ultimately realising their potential. 


Youth Mentor – Youth FOCUS Programme, Wellington

JP brings 10 years of experience in the military, with six years as a team leader. He has worked extensively in the youth sector as a leadership instructor and mentor. His passion for sport and fitness are an asset to our training courses, and aims to develop in our potential leaders, the practical skills they need to lead themselves and their teams.


Programme Facilitator, Waikato

.Tau joins us with a military background with comprehensive experience in training and leadership development. In his training and leadership capacity his work not only spans across military, it has included working with government, non-government, schools and youth groups. Tau enjoys helping individuals develop and grow, steering them to towards their goals and achieve their desired outcome.


Youth Mentor, Waikato

Catherine joined our Waikato team in March 2019 having worked previously in a Supported Employment role. She has extensive experience working with youth, both in New Zealand and in Ireland where she lived for 20 years. Catherine has an education background and has worked in many roles with disengaged youth, adults returning to education, special education and tutoring carpentry apprentices. She is driven to supporting our rangatahi by opening up opportunities to help them to realise not just who they are, but who they can be.


Youth Mentor, Waikato

Josh joined us in February 2021 and is the newest member of our team. Josh has worked with youth in a variety of roles over the past 8 years, and is passionate about building leadership capacity in young people and seeing change in the developmental sectors that influence their growth. He holds a Social Science degree and a Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership, specialising in Coaching and Mentoring. When he’s not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife Rachael, enjoys a round of golf or a game of basketball, and some sweeping corners on his motorbike.


Whanake Programme Youth Coach, Waikato

Passionate about empowering young people and their families to succeed. Originally from the far north, Hikitia has 10 years experience in case management and program coordinator roles with the Ministry of Social Development, as well as 3 years experience working as an Employment Coach in the Waikato region. Hikitia has a genuine and sincere care for people and the drive and tenacity to help them thrive and prosper in all areas of their lives.



Youth Coach  – Ākonga Pathway Programme, Wellington

Paula is a psychologist driven by the possibility of helping others reach their potential. Originally from Mexico, Paula’s experience as a high school human development teacher and career counsellor is the perfect fit for leading our Ākonga Pathway Programme in the Wellington and Wairarapa regions.




Youth Coach  – Ākonga Pathway Programme, Waikato

Riini is a passionate and experienced leader and mentor with life experience of overcoming struggles and transformative change. Riini is a friendly and driven individual with expertise in developing character and leadership of young people and their families. She enjoys functional fitness training, seafood, playing cards and being in the country with her family. Riini holds a diploma in Whanau Ora and has extensive experience working at the coalface with families in the community, dedicating her time empowering people to enjoy success in all areas of their lives.



Tanekaha Murphy

Youth Coach  – Ākonga Pathway Programme, Waikato

Tanekaha joins us with a varied career background where he started out working in factories.  He later moved into a Truancy Officer role, assisting whanau with any issues that they faced in order to get their tamariki back to school. He has also facilitated men’s and and young men’s groups where he supported them with any issues that they faced in their everyday lives. Tanekaha has a background in Muay Thai and uses his skills and knowledge in martial art to engage and motivate rangatahi. He is passionate to see our next generation overcome obstacles that they may have in life and to empower them to bring out the leader within themselves.
